What is love to an atheist?
In a similar line to writing about atheist perspectives on death and dying, I want to write some about emotions for an atheist, and specifically love.
Along with the usual “Atheists believe death is the end, so they must be depressed all the time,” I occasionally hear a similar, “Atheists think everything is chemicals, so love is the same as being hungry or tired — meaningless.” Or something similar. I’m not really sure what these kinds of statements are trying to do. My knee-jerk reaction is that they’re aimed at people on-the-fence, making it appear as though being an atheist is a pitiful existence. This may not be a malicious attack, but it seems like the most logical motive. The other explanation I would offer is that it’s justification for a person’s unwillingness to let go of certain beliefs: “If atheists can’t love, then I don’t want to be one.” (Usually this is accompanied by only a vague idea of what they mean by ‘love’, which is then modified as we go along to try to stay out of reach of someone who doesn’t believe in God.)
Lucky for us heathens, it’s not the painful drudgery of an existence that it’s made out to be. Let’s start with the fundamentals. Emotions and feelings are a part of my physical body. I have no reason to believe that there is anything supernatural about them. However, emotions, feelings and the human brain in general are so complex that I make no claims about understanding the actual mechanisms behind them. There is ample evidence, however, that as we learn more about the function of our brain we will learn more about why we feel what we feel. From an objective perspective, social emotions like love are a completely logical development for our species as well. We have evolved to empathize with each other, to form monogamous relationships and desire reciprocity of kind behavior. All of these are extremely benefitial for the species as a whole. Does any of this make the feelings less meaningful to me? Absolutely not.
Here’s what makes love seem less meaningful: when I was young, one of my best friends’ parents told me about how, without God, their marriage would have fallen apart. So, they stayed together because of God? Couples’ counseling by a religious authority very often has this slant – you stay together because it will please God (or anger him if you don’t). So what does this couple do? Are they supposed to look at each other and say, “Oh, well in that case, I guess I do love you! Thanks, God, for letting me know!” In actuality, they didn’t change their feelings for each other at all, but decided that it was more important to live unhappily now rather than displease God. How romantic.
No, I prefer love the way it is: real, physical and powerful. I am very much in love with my fiance. Does it matter that a million years of evolution might have brought us to the point where we experience things this way? Not to me: I enjoy being happy in my life. Maybe a million years of evolution told my body that it will survive the winter easier if I eat fatty foods. That doesn’t mean that I like eating fresh chocolate chip cookies any less, and the happiness I take from this loving relationship doesn’t compare. I’ve never understood why the possibility for a physical explanation is thought to make the feeling any less potent.
I find the Christian way of loving your spouse through God insulting and demeaning. Why are we not capable of understanding love and making our own decisions about our own feelings? Is it supposed to help keep relationships together? Statistics say it doesn’t really do anything. Why then is it so important submit their feelings for God’s approval?
The human side of our emotions makes them beautiful. I know that when my fiance tells me “I love you”, that it’s her saying it. There’s no invisible puppet master as the source of her love for me; it’s completely between us. We can ask, “What do you love about me?” and the answer has nothing to do with some unnecessary third wheel. Everything between us is layed out on the table, and there’s nothing mystical about it. It’s just love.

The timing of this article couldn’t be better. I’m currently “in the process” of falling in love with my girlfriend (used “the ‘L’ word” for the first time last Saturday). We’ve been dating for a couple of months and I’ve fallen quite hard for her, to the point where I’ve become “that guy who can’t shut the hell up about how amazing his new girlfriend is”. You know that guy? Yeah. Right now that’s me.
Well, here’s the thing. We’re both rabid atheists and hard core skeptics, and we’ve been making a game of describing our head-over-heels falling for each other in clinical terms. “I’m really enjoying sitting here engaging in pair-bonding behavior with you.” “Oh! I love the oxytocin rush I get when you say things like that!” That sort of thing.
The biggest revelation that we’ve had while going through this process is that being fully cognizant of the biochemical underpinnings of what’s happening to us does not in ANY way diminish their effect, nor does it confer any ability to resist it. I *know* that I need to be up early for work the next morning, and that my desire to continue chatting with her until 3 am is driven by the endorphins I get from interacting with her, but I can’t bring myself to go to bed and I also can’t bring myself to feel bad about it.
Finding out just how coldly rational we *aren’t* has been a humbling experience. It’s scary, but it’s also been absolutely wonderful.
Oh, and Shara? I love you, sweetie. :-*
I’m very happy for you; that’s a wonderful feeling isn’t it!
A Darwinian romantic might phrase it something like, “Natural selection has spent millions of years shaping my desire for the perfect mate. You are such a magnificent specimen of our species that I lose control of my rationality. You are so incredible that my survival instincts matter less than my need to be with you.” I’d say that’s quite a bit more meaningful (and a better compliment) than “God wants us to be together.”
That’s for you Julie — I love you

My sweetie responded before I could formulate my response, so, yeah, what he said!
I was actually a psych and sociology major in school, and I specialized in marriage and family counseling (plus had a good dose of sex research, all for the counseling, of course), so I’m *quite* familiar with the mechanical process of things like “love”. As a “rabid atheist and hardcore skeptic”, not to mention activist bent, that sociological background lends itself very easily to understanding the mechanics of the other things that are so misunderstood about atheists, like why we believe the things we do, and how that affects our outlook on things like death and love and even social responsibility and ethical values.
And I have to second the idea that knowing the mechanics does not, in any way, detract from the *experience* of it. In fact, I think it enhances the experience of it.
Much like other atheists have extolled the wonders of the universe, and how a belief in supernatural beings actually makes the universe smaller and less awesome, knowing the biomechanics of “love” only serves to make it more inspiring. That a bit of chemical here, and some hormone there can be responsible for the intense rush of emotion and the strong sense of attachment makes it all the more amazing for its complexity and simplicity.
I know (about as well as we understand anything about human chemistry) which hormone is responsible for which action, what any given feeling is responsible for which evolutionary advantage … and that doesn’t change the fact that I’m completely, head-over-heels, annoyingly infatuated, disgustingly gushy, can find *any* excuse to bring up his name, wildly attracted, starting to plan in the long-term, stupid in love with my boyfriend. I have to consciously remind myself not to bring him up for every little thing that reminds me of him, that no one else wants to hear about how wonderful I think he as as much as I do, and that really, no one cares or wants to hear all the details of our conversations, my thoughts about him, or our sex life, so just *shut up*.
The universe is a humbling, inspiring, wonderous place that, if I lived a million years I would never tire of its beauty. From its breathtaking vistas of galaxies to its breathtaking elegance of the order in seeming-chaos to its breathtaking experiences of life in its pain and love, I can’t even comprehend who this “angry, miserable atheist” is that I keep hearing so much about. The happiest people I know are atheists, including both of my boyfriends. But having been raised in a religious setting, I *do* comprehend the misery, the terror, the smallness of the universe, the hubris of humanity, and the sheer mediocrity of the supernatural world, and I honestly can’t understand why anyone would think that is the more amazing way to view the world.
Oh, and Eric? I love you too, sweetie! :-*
My other sweetie, who I’ve been with for several years now and am no longer going through the early stages of pair-bonding (also known as New Relationship Energy) but still quite in love with (an entirely different chemical bonding process, equally fascinating as NRE), wrote an excellent piece called Why I’m An Optimist. This piece is a fantastic essay about the limitations and hopelessness of supernatural beliefs and why atheism is actually a more liberating, more humbling, yet more awe-inspiring outlook.

That is well known that money makes us autonomous. But how to act if one doesn’t have money? The only one way is to try to get the business loans and just auto loan.
