Door-to-door atheism
My new neighborhood seems to have much more Mormon traffic than I’ve had other places. They ride up to your door on bikes with nice tucked-in shirts and ties and ask you if you know how evil you are. It’s quite pleasant. Oh wait. What’s the other thing… irritating. Not because they came to my door, but because actually they have treated me pretty badly in the past. One time I recall, I opened the door to see them standing there with their pamphlets and, since I’m not trying to be overly rude, let them give me their opening line before I told them I wasn’t interested. But my dogs were quite excited to see someone outside, so I pushed them back inside with my foot so that they wouldn’t run amuck in the neighborhood. No, not kicked, pushed barefoot back a couple of feet. Honestly I thought it was a courtesy to them as well. And they had the nerve to chastise me about mistreating my animals, and how much I must need their help to learn how to discipline these animals properly. Or one time the obviously more experienced door-knocker seemed to feel he needed to make an example of bullying the unbeliever to the new guy. Ug. I didn’t say even a word against you.
It’s always been a glimmer in my mind that one day I’ll be sitting around just watching TV or reading a book with no plans when they show up and get to have a good debate with them. Well, I’m not sure how much of a debate I would actually get, but it’s a nice thought. One thing I’ve always wanted to ask them though is this line of thinking. Even with all of your door-to-door converting, there has to be someone that you just don’t have time to get to. What happens to this guy? Is he ok because he never had a chance to learn about your teachings, or does he burn for eternity because he never accepted something he was not exposed to?
Let’s take the first option. He’s not going to suffer forever because it wasn’t his fault that he never got exposed to the “true” teachings. Well, then what about the people they did talk to who didn’t convert, like me? I wasn’t going to hell until they showed up and told me about it all; their actions directly are pushing me into hell. Maybe if they did just a little bit better of convincing me, I’d be saved. Or if they didn’t show up I’d be ok. But because they came and failed, I’m doomed.
Ok, what about option #2. This poor sap never heard the good word they’re preaching, but he’s going to burn in hell anyway. That’s a bum rap for that guy. But how do theses guys feel about that? It takes, what, 10 minutes per house? So when they go to bed at night and can’t sleep for 20 minutes do they think about the 2 households of people that will suffer for eternity because they didn’t make it to them? Every time they hit the snooze button in the morning, do they weigh the pros and cons of getting a little more sleep vs condemning another person forever? Sounds like a rough life to me…
But anyway, this got me thinking. Have any atheists tried this kind of thing? I know I’ve seen pamphlets with atheist ideas online. Can anyone point me to stories or recaps of how it went and what they tried? It would be a very interesting experiment. I have no intention of insulting anyone or being aggressive about anything. But how would people react if I came to their door and said something like, “Hi, I’m an atheist and I think we’ve gotten an unfair reputation in this country. I’d be happy to answer any questions you have about my beliefs if you’re interested. ”
Would I get hostility because I’m an atheist? Is it too intrusive, no matter how nice I am? The idea is to get some discourse going. I don’t have a script to read; I want to know what they think and go from there. Friendly debate is a wonderful thing. Maybe I’d stick my trusty iPhone on Voice memo in my pocket and release the more interesting ones as podcast kind of things. Who knows? But it sounds interesting.
So, let me know what you think. Has this been tried before? If I came to your door, how would you feel about it?
Side note: Did you know you can request Mormons to come to your house online? I would never condone doing this, but I remember in college people used to have endless fun sending Mormons to each other’s house… The internet is a wonderful thing, but you have to watch out. Anonymity only helps people take advantage of you sometimes.

Since there is no god, going to peoples houses to ask them about it would be like going to peoples houses and telling them that there is no Santa Claus and what do they think of that. Bottom line it is silly.
I understand that point. To give the usual quote, “Atheism is a religion like not stamp collecting is a hobby.” I’m not really interested in trying to un-convert anyone. The point was more about giving people a chance to not automatically think negative things when they think “atheist” by answering questions. Still, it may be silly anyway. I don’t know. I was hoping someone would show me some examples of that and how it went over. Mostly all I can find is this, which is more about getting back at them than pursuing anything more useful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dW-bt_1LzY
I think it comes down to defining yourself as an atheist. As Sam Harris has said there is no word for a non-astrologer or a non-psychic etc etc. An irrational belief is an irrational belief. So to put a label on yourself as an atheist is a bit contrived and to me going door to door with this contrived label makes you silly.
Having someone come to your house unannounced is simply annoying and intrusive no matter what the reason. As an atheist, I would be as annoyed if an atheist came to my house to talk about atheism — in my home I want to be left alone unless I choose otherwise. So I think part of the problem is simply the method of spreading the message and not really the message.
My only personal example is that I did have Jehovahs Witnesses come to my place once asking me if I thought about why god allowed bad things to happen to good people. My honest answer was no I didn’t think about that. The next question was do I beieive in god. Again honest answer was no. I think the two old ladies at the door never heard an answer like that since it pretty much ended the exchange with a have a nice day and then good-bye. It was a beautiful thing.

I’m coming to that conclusion as well. I have no intention of annoying people, which would pretty much do the opposite of what I had in mind. But About the use of the word atheist as being contrived… Yes, it is, but at this point I don’t have a problem using it. It wouldn’t be necessary, except that the assumption is usually the opposite. In my opinion, it makes the most sense to only use a label if there is a reason. And not-belief shouldn’t count. Still, especially in this country, some flavor of theism is expected, and it helps to have a word to describe that absense.
That’s a great idea! As far as literature goes how about “Letter to a Christian Nation” by Sam Harris I chose this book because for one thing its small, inexpensive and easy to read. The main reason for this book is its overall message, that we have to lift the taboo on criticising religion and talk about it or else mankind is in serious trouble. Just have to go buy some copies now and get the guts to go door to door….
Door to door anything is simply annoying. Even girl guides cookies — those I will buy however, but am still annoyed that I have to be faced with being a jerk if I don’t buy the cookies. So really the method of attack subjects them to deserved ridicule and the method of door-to-door is just an attack strategy.
What if mormons (or other religion) decided that kidnapping people off the street and then subjecting them to isolation, sleep-deprivation, and starvation in order to get them to agree with the teaching of the church of mormon was a good idea. Wondering if athiests should kidnap, sleep deprive, and starve believers into atheists then that would be just as bad. And any atheist that thinks that is a good idea is someone that I would rather not have anything to do with.
In regards to the term athiest, I do agree that it is likely needed since of all irrational beliefs, (voodo, black magic, witchcraft, astrology, psychic powers, paranormal, etc etc) belief in god gets a pass and is treated special despite being just as baseless. So in that setting since god has a special pass I think you do need a special term like atheist that indicates that you think that special pass is as ridiculous as all of the other stuff.
Anyway, I guess this is a new blog. I’m glad that you have the initiative to do this because even if I had the time to set up a site like this, I doubt I would have the initiative and motivation.
I hope this doesn’t turn out to be like the ravingatheist website that ultimately became the ravingtheist. This isn’t my quote, but if you truly are an atheist then becoming a theist would be something like this:
“An atheist would find it as easy to abandon their skepticism and rationality as a seeing person would find it to purposefully poke out their own eyes.”
It is a relatively new blog. I’m glad that you appreciate it. I’ve enjoyed other people’s blogs for a long time, as I like to see what all kinds of people are thinking. It seemed like a good thing for me to contribute to.
I hope not to get too “raving” about anything, because I think that puts people off more often than not (even when I agree with some things someone says, being a jerk about it makes me want to leave). If it happens, I’d hope that someone would call me on it.
About using kidnappings to “convert” people, I think we can agree that doing illegal and/or extremely immoral things in the name of good (whatever your definition of that happens to be) is a little bit of a different subject than simply going door to door. While it’s still somewhat intrusive, people have every right and ability to slam the door in your face.
Still, I’m happy with the comments this idea has brought about. I think the ultimate point is: I may think I’m right about something, but that doesn’t mean that I have any more right to impose that on someone than anyone else does. If it’s annoying for me to be hassled by Mormons, it’s probably just as annoying and intrusive for me to do the same thing.
